Adele

“I’ve never had self esteem in regards to my body...even to this day I don’t, which most people find surprising because I am well adjusted to not having it. I don’t dislike myself, in fact, I have an overabundance of self-respect, but I am not really a big fan of my body. A body is a body is a body...I don’t pay a lot of attention to it.”
Born with Myasthenia Gravis; a congenital neuromuscular disease which causes weakness of the skeletal muscles and maintaining a “normal, healthy” weight nearly impossible, Adele is frequently thought to be anorexic, despite the fact that her weight is her normal and healthy weight.
“I guess to me my body isn't a temple, it's just a building and I'm still going to live here despite it getting broken into...it just gets a new coat of paint. As long as it keeps me warm and safe I'm good. I know so many people that are at war with healthy bodies and unhealthy bodies and we're at war with so much in life it would be exhausting to be at war with myself all the time.”
Self described as authentic, grounded, adventurous and strong willed, Adele has never before had a platform to discuss body image issues.
“In the past I have had trouble talking about body issues to people because most people don’t want to talk about it because I am so skinny. Most of them don’t understand that the issues heavy people have, skinny people also have. But, people get angry at us (skinny people) for it. So I don’t usually get to talk about it. This project has given me a voice.”
